Dental crowns are usually made of porcelain and they are designed to mimic the natural shape of your tooth. After it is attached, your crown will blend in perfectly with the rest of your teeth for a seamless restoration. Your crown will cover up your tooth all the way down to the gum line, effectively replacing it completely. This helps protect and preserve your remaining enamel and tooth structure and restores your smile after your tooth has been damaged.
The placement of a dental crown at Genoa Smiles usually takes two appointments over a 2-3 week period. First, you’ll come in to have your tooth trimmed and prepared. Dr. Justin will clean your teeth and numb the treatment area.
Then, he will remove decayed and damaged enamel from your tooth and reshape it into a strong, stable platform, to which the crown can be attached. Once this process is complete, he will take impressions of your mouth to create a 3-D model of your teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab, where your crown will be built.
It will take 2-3 weeks to have your crown built and sent back to our office, so you will get a temporary crown to wear in the meantime. Once your crown arrives at Genoa Smiles, you’ll come in for your final appointment. Dr. Justin will check the crown’s fit and make adjustments to the fit, if necessary. Then, he will bond the crown into place permanently using dental cement.
Dental crowns are commonly used to treat cavities that are too deep or large to be treated with a dental filling. Sometimes, a crown is recommended if you have a large filling that is failing. A crown may also be used to protect your tooth after treatment with root canal therapy or repair broken or cracked teeth. More rarely, crowns may be used for purely cosmetic purposes, to restore a tooth that can’t be treated with an alternative procedure like dental bonding or porcelain veneers.
The biggest benefit of dental crowns is that they restore both the natural appearance and function of your smile. They also help cover up and protect the underlying enamel, shielding your tooth from further damage or decay.
Crowns are durable and long-lasting, too. They will not stain, and usually have a lifespan of more than 15 years. In addition, they require little special care. Just continue to brush and floss normally and see Dr. Justin every six months for a cleaning- your smile will stay beautiful for years to come!
"This was our first appointment seeing the new dentist, Dr. Justin and the new hygienist. They were both amazing! Very personable, professional, knowledgeable, and just overall fantastic! My 9 year old clicked right away with the hygienist. Love the new coffee bar in the lobby! Who knew Dr. Justin was so crafty?!
Katrina does an amazing job with all of the insurance issues! She is very proficient in her job! Rebecca is another amazing employee!! She is very personable and genuinely cares about the patients!!
Do you need a new dentist, try Genoa Smiles!!"
"Dr. Justin has taken over from Dr. Dave. Don't worry, he provides the same excellent, caring service that I am used to having. He explains options to you and involves you in your care. He has just expanded his hours which really helps me meet my appointments. As a retired educator, he would be excellent with small children just starting at the dentist through post high school. I have friends that have already transferred to him and are very pleased. I drive 45 minutes to have him as my dentist. I know of others that drive even longer for his great dental care."
